Recent
research by PPP Lifetime Care (May 2000) indicates that:
- people
believe there is a one in two chance that they will need
professional care in old age.
- within
the AB social group four out of five people believe they
will have to contribute towards the cost of such care.
- nearly
half of all adults knows at least one elderly person in
need of care.
- one
adult in seven is involved in providing care for at least
one elderly person.
Many
older people worry about the possibility that they will end
up in a home, and especially that the money needed for a good
home will run out. Recent Government proposals that the State
will pay for nursing costs will help, but the reality is that
the bulk of the fees in most nursing homes is for the cost
of accommodation and personal care - which is not covered
under the new rules. The average nursing home fees in 1999
were £19,084 p.a. (source Laing & Buisson), and of this amount
nursing costs accounted for about £5,000 p.a. - leaving a
shortfall of around £14,000 p.a.
However,
there are solutions available - in some cases even for those
already in a home. For more information, e-mail us on info@sgholding.co.uk
